THEN HOW IT IS REFLECTED TO TODAY'S SOCIETY?
Lord of the Flies is microcosm of our today’s society. The book, overall, is reflecting human nature and instinct and how it is civilized over periods.
People’s natural instinct is typically self-esteemed and evil. In other words, human beings are naturally born with violence and immorality. However, simultaneously, as we were learnt how important rules are and taught how to act or behave politely and in more mature ways, superego came into existence, coexisting with savagery in our mind.
In Lord of the Flies, Golding described the use of rules and disciplines to oppress the savage-self down and also expressed chaos among the boys without existence of rules. In the book, boys went out of control, enjoyed the freedom without grownups. And they tried to overpower other boys using strength. However, although there were rules and leader, boys started to deny their superego and follow what their id is whispering to them.
This reflects the current situation of today’s society because boys in Lord of the Flies indicates people in society and rules and laws made by Ralph and election of leader reflects laws and leaders in our society. This gives the message about human nature, mainly, and how civilization easily break down and collapse if there are no rules that have been suppressing natural instinct, which is savagery, from kicking in.
