“A leader takes people where they want to go. A great leader takes people where they don‘t necessarily want to go, but ought to be.” -Rosalynn Carter
MAJOR CHARACTERS
In Lord of the Flies, there were major characters who had different thoughts and ways to lead the group, especially, Ralph and Jack. Both of them, manifested their differences as leaders. Ralph led the boys where they don’t necessarily need to go but ought to be for their survival and Jack took the boys where they wanted to go and wanted to be.
RALPH:
Ralph led the group and sought for right ways that everyone could survive. Moreover, Ralph was thoughtful and concerned about what is necessary in order to survive on the island and took all the burden and responsibility as a chief. What is more is that Ralph led the rest of the boys to be rescued soon as possible by building signal fire at the top of the mountain, building shelters which are huts, and searching for water for survival.
JACK:
With savagery and hostile mind, Jack felt enmity towards Ralph who became a leader instead of him. Most boys except some littluns, Piggy followed Jack more than their own leader, Ralph. Jack was interested only in killing pigs and hunting which other boys wanted the island’s life to be rather than having anonymous days, following rules and what Ralph told them to do. Although jack wasn’t a leader of the whole group of boys, it seem to be apparent that he was a chief.
SIMON:
In Lord of the Flies, Simon played an important role who first grasped the facts of a monster on the island. Simon was different from other boys as he was in totally opposite plane and had different view towards morality and human’s natural instinct-which is goodness and badness. Unlike other boys, he was literally connected with nature, such as seeing an illusion of pig’s head. He stood on the side of goodness against the immorality of other boys especially Jack who represented a primal badness of human nature.
